About Ajax, Ontario
Ajax began as a wartime munitions town in the 1940s and took its name from HMS Ajax, a Royal Navy cruiser; many streets are still named after the ship’s crew. It has since grown into one of the most diverse communities in Ontario.
Its biggest asset is the waterfront. About 7 km of Lake Ontario shoreline is public parkland, linked by the Waterfront Trail through Rotary Park, Paradise Park and Veterans Point Gardens.
Ajax also includes the historic Pickering Village, a heritage main street on Kingston Road that predates the town itself. North Ajax, built mostly since the 1990s, offers newer family subdivisions close to Highway 401 and 412.
